Chad Hurley and Steve Chen are back with MixBit, a new mobile app that they hope will make it easier to shoot, edit and remix videos on the go.

YouTube Founders' Next Act: MixBit

MixBit, a creation of two YouTube founders, tries to stake out a middle ground between high-end video cutting tools and Instagram.

Two of YouTube’s founders are wading back into familiar territory.
On Thursday, Avos Systems, a startup led by YouTube founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen, launched a smartphone app called MixBit to shoot and edit online videos — features shared by services such as Vine and Video on Instagram. The service also lets people reuse clips shot by other MixBit users to plug into Web videos of their own.
Irony alert: MixBit videos can’t be uploaded to YouTube.
In an interview, Hurley described MixBit as a middle ground between sophisticated but complicated video-editing tools such as Final Cut Pro or iMovie, and the easy-to-use but limited features of Vine. Both Twitter-owned Vine and FacebookFB -0.85%’s Instagram let people assemble short digital videos by editing together scenes they shoot on their smartphones.
Hurley said after he left YouTube in 2010, he avoided working on projects related to Web video because of the inevitable reaction he was creating a wannabe YouTube. “I wasn’t looking for that comparison,” he said.
MixBit was born, Hurley said, because “tremendous opportunity still lies ahead” in Web video. Hurley also said he couldn’t shake off what he sees as a need for better tools to unleash new types of creative work enabled by smartphones. Hurley said smartphones create a level of Web-video democracy he would have loved to tap during YouTube’s (pre-iPhone) startup phase.
MixBit’s video-recording and editing features are similar to those of Vine and Instagram. A person using the MixBit app can press a “record” button on his iPhone screen, and shoot a video as short as one second, or as long as 16 seconds. With a few taps on the app, he can edit or delete each discrete clip, and cobble as many as 256 of them into a mini-movie up to about one hour long.
People can then upload videos on MixBit.com for public view, or limit the video to a small group of friends. Hurley said MixBit hopes to see how people remix images shot by other people to create “something new and unexpected.”
The MixBit iOS app is launching Thursday, and Hurley said an Android version is coming within weeks.
Even as he returns to the digital-video world, Hurley said he doesn’t worry that he’ll never again be able to replicate the success of YouTube. “I have nothing to prove,” he said.
