The New York Times Pulls Out of Apple News.Google will start paying to display news content from Germany, Australia and Brazil

London (CNN Business)Google will start paying to display news content from some media outlets after years of resisting demands from publishers.
The company announced several new licensing deals with publishers in Germany, Australia and Brazil on Thursday as part of a "new news experience" due to be launched later this year. It will focus on "high-quality content," Brad Bender, Google's (GOOGL) VP Product Management for News said in a blog post.
"This program will help participating publishers monetize their content through an enhanced storytelling experience that lets people go deeper into more complex stories, stay informed and be exposed to a world of different issues and interests," Bender said.

Business leaders condemn Trump’s visa freeze

Facebook, Google, Amazon and others in the business world reacted with anger after President Trump suspended new work visas for foreigners through at least the end of the year.
■ Google’s chief executive, Sundar Pichai, was “disappointed” by the decision. “Immigration has contributed immensely to America’s economic success, making it a global leader in tech, and also Google the company it is today,” he said in a tweet.
■ Facebook said, “Highly-skilled visa holders play a critical role in driving innovation — at Facebook and at organizations across the country — and that’s something we should encourage, not restrict.”
■ Amazon said that “preventing high skilled professionals from entering the country and contributing to America’s economic recovery puts American global competitiveness at risk.”
Context: The order signed by the president on Monday denies employment permits for foreign workers, like those in tech, finance and more. Mr. Trump said the visa programs “pose an unusual threat to the employment of American workers” as the coronavirus pandemic batters the economy.
Numbers: According to government data, the suspended visa categories accounted for about 600,000 workers in 2019.

Tech giants are getting even bigger

Tech giants are getting even bigger

The global economy is reeling from a pandemic-induced recession, but tech’s largest companies — providing ever more essential online services — are wildly profitable and flush with billions of dollars.
So Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google and Microsoft are aggressively placing new bets on a future in which they will be bigger and more powerful than ever.
Details: Facebook announced its largest investment in an outside business in April, a $5.7 billion stake in the Indian telecommunications company Reliance Jio. Last month, Facebook bought the search engine and database company Giphy for an estimated $400 million. And, it recently announced that it had invested in Gojek, a “super app” in Southeast Asia.
Analysis: The growth is only likely to add to the worries of lawmakers and regulators in Washington and Europe. European Union officials are preparing antitrust charges against Amazon, accusing the company of using its e-commerce dominance to box out smaller rivals, while Britain has begun an inquiry into Facebook’s purchase of Giphy.

How Google Docs became the social media of the resistance

In the week after George Floyd’s murder, hundreds of thousands of people joined protests across the US and around the globe, demanding education, attention, and justice. But one of the key tools for organizing these protests is a surprising one: it’s not encrypted, doesn’t rely on signing in to a social network, and wasn’t even designed for this purpose. It’s Google Docs.

In just the last week, Google Docs has emerged as a way to share everything from lists of books on racism to templates for letters to family members and representatives to lists of funds and resources that are accepting donations. Shared Google Docs that anyone can view and anyone can edit, anonymously, have become a valuable tool for grassroots organizing during both the coronavirus pandemic and the police brutality protests sweeping the US. It’s not the first time. In fact, activists and campaigners have been using the word processing software for years as a more efficient and accessible protest tool than either Facebook or Twitter.
