Facebook Drops Physical Gifts Service

FacebookFB +5.30% will end a program that allowed users to send physical goods to one another through the social network, once seen as a direct threat to big e-commerce players like Amazon and eBayEBAY +1.12%.
The about-face comes less than a year after Facebook first started allowing users to send their friends merchandise such as stuffed bears and cupcakes to celebrate birthdays and other occasions.
Facebook will still sell gifts, but only virtual ones such as gift cards. A spokeswoman said 80% of the items sold through its gifts service were gift cards, which prompted the change.
Facebook said it would complete the changes to its gifts offering by the end of next week. The company has a history of starting revenue experiments and then abandoning them, including local deals and its own currency, dubbed Facebook Credits.
The gifts change was reported earlier by All Things Digital.
