Google cooks up recipe search feature

Monster search engine Google has added a recipe view to its repertoire. The Mountain View company began the new feature Thursday and expects to continue working out the kinks for the next few days. Now, users can narrow down searches for recipes based on everything from ingredients to cook time.
"We realized recipes were a popular search, and we're constantly trying to improve the experience," says Kavi Goel, the project's product manager.
Goel says Google gets 10 million searches a day for recipes. While it's only 1 percent of the overall search numbers, he says it's significant enough to give recipes their own view. Google is following in the footsteps of such websites as Foodily and Yummly.
In April, Google devised new technology to better narrow searches. Over the next few months, it perfected that knowledge to roll out the recipe finder. Although users could always find recipes under the old system - which often required slogging through lots of unrelated results - the new one enables people to narrow their searches to show only recipes. Those results include ratings, ingredients and pictures. Furthermore, the user can narrow down the search according to calories, what publication it ran in, cook time and food types. Searchers can also plug in special occasions such as Mother's Day or Valentine's Day to find appropriate recipes.
To get to the recipe view, click on the "Recipes" link in the left-hand panel when searching for a recipe.
