Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer’s $1 Billion Retirement Present

Microsoft Corp.MSFT +7.29% said Mr. Ballmer will retire within the next 12 months, an announcement that sent the stock sharply higher Friday morning and pushed the value of his stake in the company up by almost $1 billion. He will depart after the process of choosing his successor is completed.
Microsoft shares jumped as much as 8.7% to $35.20 on Friday. Some back-of-the-envelop math shows Mr. Ballmer’s stake in Microsoft jumped significantly following the announcement.
Mr. Ballmer’s net worth was $15.2 billion as of March, according to Forbes. Microsoft’s latest proxy showed Mr. Ballmer owned about 333 million shares of the company, making them worth about $10.8 billion based on yesterday’s closing price.
At the stock’s peak this morning, Mr. Ballmer’s stake was valued at about $11.7 billion. That means Mr. Ballmer made on paper a cool $936 million this morning as investors rejoiced his announced retirement.
From a company’s standpoint, it’s never a good sign when investors rejoice a CEO’s impending departure. Nevertheless, Mr. Ballmer’s piggy bank just got much fatter in the process.
