Facebook Unveils ‘Embedded Posts’
On Wednesday, the company announced that it was rolling out “Embedded Posts” — the ability to embed, or place, public Facebook posts on other Web sites, including users’ own blogs. These posts can include multimedia, such as pictures or video.
“Today, we are beginning to roll out Embedded Posts to make it possible for people to bring the most compelling, timely public posts from Facebook to the rest of the Web,” Facebook engineers Dave Capra and Ray He said in a company blog post.
Users can also like and share the embedded posts, from buttons on the post, and click on hashtags to see other posts on Facebook that are related to the conversation.
The move is a logical step for Facebook, which has been pushing hard to be a major player in real-time conversations on the Web, such as big news or entertainment events. Although the social network is far larger than Twitter, its rival is seen as one of the most dominant hubs for breaking events. Notably, Facebook recently incorporated hashtags on its site–keywords flagged with the “#” to help index conversations–a feature that first gained popularity on Twitter.
For both companies, the battle to own real-time conversation is a critical one, as competition for ad dollars accelerates on mobile devices and desktops.
According to the blog post, the company will first work with a handful of publishers such as CNN and Huffington Post, before rolling it more broadly.
