Microsoft Quietly Gains Share in Virtualization
By Steven D. Jones
Microsoft Corp. MSFT -0.37% is struggling to gain share in markets for mobile phones and tablets, the company has quietly become a fast-growing provider of virtualization software.Virtualization underpins the shift to cloud computing, which makes more efficient use of servers by pooling their resources. The software allows companies to run multiple computers on a single machine, saving hardware cost and handling tasks from banking to retail.Redmond, Wash-based Microsoft introduced its HyperV virtualization software in 2008 and has climbed to second in the $5 billion market behind industry leader VMware Inc. VMW -0.53% of Palo Alto, Calif.
“We’re now in a situation where we have a very, very strong market share. We’re growing every quarter, and the dominant guy is losing every quarter as it relates to virtualization,” Microsoft Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner said at an investment conference this week. VMware said no one was available to comment.
Success with virtualization software could help Microsoft win more lucrative cloud-software business as well.
“We have a really powerful flywheel, if you will, to continue to gain momentum in the enterprise cloud space,” Mr. Turner said.
Last year, Microsoft HyperV was installed on 27.6% of the new computer servers put into service, according to data tracker IDC, up from 20.3% in 2008. VMware is still the dominant company in the market with 56.8% share, but that’s down from 65.4% in 2008. Competitors Citrix Systems Inc. and Red Hat Inc. RHT +0.77% both had smaller shares.
Analyst Al Gillen of IDC said Microsoft is growing fastest in emerging markets in South America and Asia. In developed markets, it’s picking up business from smaller companies. Because most customers receive Microsoft HyperV as a feature of Windows Server 2012, it’s a cheaper on-ramp to virtual computing and the cloud, he said.
“We see very little evidence of VMware clients ripping out installations and replacing them with Microsoft,” said Mr. Gillen. “But those emerging markets are battle grounds for VMware because they have to compete on price.”
In addition, Microsoft’s growing virtualization business could help sales of its System Center and other cloud-management software.
VMware and Microsoft have developed software for managing data centers, said analyst Chris Wolf of Gartner Inc. IT -1.24%, and they are aiming next for the $10 billion market for data center supervision. That market is now dominated by CA Inc BMC Software Inc. BMC -0.09% Hewlett-Packard Co. HPQ -3.33% and International Business Machines Corp. IBM -0.64%
Once a company adopts virtualization “the data center and all the capital [and effort] it took to build and staff, that can be done by software too. That’s really at the heart of the Microsoft strategy now,” Mr. Wolf said.
