對抗中國網路審查 Google認輸

〔編譯俞智敏/綜合報導〕網路搜尋龍頭業者Google極不情願地坦承,該公司對抗中國網路審查的努力宣告失敗,Google已低調停止對中國用戶提供敏感詞提醒服務,因為中國政府找到了防堵的新辦法。
試圖突破中國封鎖 徒勞無功
根據衛報報導指出,Google自去年五月以來始終在幕後努力,對遭到中國當局禁止搜尋的敏感詞執行「貓捉老鼠」式的邊緣政策,當中國用戶搜尋這些政治敏感詞時提供提醒服務,試圖改善中國用戶的搜尋結果。
但 Google與中國政府間的角力於去年十二月進入白熱化,因為儘管Google提供提醒,中國用戶依舊被中國當局切斷連線。據一名中國消息人士透 露,Google曾數度試圖避開中國的封鎖卻徒勞無功,Google最後認為繼續與中國政府間的技術爭議只會造成「不良效果」,終於決定停止這項服務。
敏感詞提醒服務 上月初叫停
中國網路審查監測網站「防火牆」(Great Fire)四日公布對中國境內搜尋的測試結果,證實Google取消了敏感詞提醒服務,同時也提供一份協助網頁。
Google公司發言人證實已於十二月取消了敏感詞提醒服務,但以中國狀況敏感為由拒絕發表更多評論。
Google於去年五月公布這項提醒功能時曾解釋說,中國用戶在搜尋如「長江」、「江蘇移動」等關鍵詞時常遇到連線問題。但在Google公布這項功能的廿四小時內,中國政府就設法讓該功能失效。數天後,Google又在六月修改了敏感詞提醒方式,也隨即遭中國政府封鎖。
隨著雙方緊張情勢不斷上升,去年十一月,Google的英文以及中文服務遭封鎖達廿四小時,到了十二月初,當用戶持續反映進行某些搜尋仍遇到問題時,Google終於決定放棄這項服務。
Google與中國政府之間的關係自二○○六年起就相當緊張,當時Google首度在中國提供網路搜尋服務。最新的爭議發生時機,正值中國政府開始對網路進行更廣泛箝制,包括封鎖協助用戶匿名上網的「虛擬私有網路」(VPN )在內。
中國政府上月才剛宣布實施網路實名制,要求用戶必須向網路服務提供業者提供真實身分,再度引發各界對中國言論自由感到擔憂。
