Google, which recently began one of the biggest transformations of the company's Web-search engine, said Wednesday that it was taking the “next baby steps” toward realizing the dream of artificial intelligence: a computer that understands the world as humans do.

Google will pay $22.5 million to settle charges that it secretly bypassed the privacy settings of millions of people who use Apple Inc. devices, the Federal Trade Commission said Thursday.
